Choose the correct option in place of question mark (?) in the following series:


1, 5, 9, (?), 25, 37, 49.

(a) 16

(b) 17

(c) 19

(d) 20

Solution:

In this series there are two groups of numbers.

In the first group 1, 9, 25 49 and in the second group 5, (?), 37

In the first group we add 8 to the first number, then add 16 to the second number, and then add 24 to the third number.

1 + 8 = 9

9 + 16 = 25

25 + 24 = 49

In the second group;

2^2 + 1 = 5

4^2 + 1 = 17

6^2 + 1 = 37


Answer: 17
