We will learn to check for subtraction and addition answers after solving.
We can use addition to check subtraction.
We have learnt that we subtract smaller number from the larger number to find the difference of two numbers. Therefore, to check the answer we can add the difference to the smaller number and if the sum equals to the larger number, our answer is correct.
Let us subtract 9 from 27 and check our answer.
2 7 - 9 1 8 |
We add the smaller number to the difference, we get the larger number. |
1 8 + 9 2 7 |
Start with the difference then add the number you subtracted.
Difference of two numbers is correct when the sum of the subtrahend number and the difference is equal to the minuend.
We can say that,
Let us subtract 38 from 96 and check our answer.
How can you use addition to check the answer of subtraction? How can you use subtraction to check the answer of addition?
Addition (+) and subtraction (-) are opposite operations in math, so you can use one to check the answer of the other one.
For example
1. 2 + 3 = 5
5 - 3 = 2
The first way says, if we start with 2 and add 3, we get 5. The second way says, if we start with 5 and take away 3, we get 2. We are just playing with the same numbers forward and backward.
2.
Thus, 6476 - 2365 = 4111 is true as 2365 + 4111 = 6476. Similarly, the sum of two numbers is true if the difference between the sum and the first number is equal to the second number, i.e., 2365 + 4111 = 6476 is true as 6476 - 4111 = 2365 or 6476 - 2365 is equal to 4111.
3. Checking Subtraction with Addition:
Checking Subtraction using Addition:
4. Subtract 28 from 63 and check the answer.
Solution:
We need to regroup 63 as we cannot subtract 8 from 3.
On taking 1 ten from the tens column,
we get 5 in the tens column and 13 in the ones column.
13 ones - 8 ones = 5 ones and
5 tens - 2 tens = 3 tens.
How do we check if this answer is correct?
The method is simple.
We will add the difference of the two numbers to the number we subtracted.
So, we add 35 to 28.
The answer we get is 63.
This shows that our subtraction was done correctly.
Similarly.
If 96 - 34 = 62 then 34 + 62 = 96
If 67 - 48 = 19 then 48 + 19 = 67
If 20 - 8 = 12 then 8 + 12 = 20
CHECKING SUBTRACTION WITH ADDITION
5. Let us subtract 23 from 49 and check our answer.
Solution:
T O
4 9
- 2 3
2 6
If we add the 'difference' to the 'subtrahend' (the smaller number), we get the 'minuend' (the greater number).
You can use addition to check your answer for subtraction.
Check: Difference + Subtrahend = Minuend
