Multiplication and Division are Related

Does multiplication and division are related?

Yes, multiplication and division both are related to each other.

A few examples are given are given below to show how they are related to each other.

(i) The picture shows 6 cats arranged in groups of 2.

It shows a multiplication fact: 3 × 2 = 6

It shows a division fact: 6 ÷ 2 = 3

From the multiplication fact 2 × 3 = 6, we get the division fact 6 ÷ 3 = 2

(ii) The picture shows 10 bears arranged in groups of 2.

It shows a multiplication fact: 5 × 2 = 10

It shows a division fact: 10 ÷ 2 = 5

From the multiplication fact 2 × 5 = 10, we get the division fact 10 ÷ 5 = 2

(iii) Relationship between Multiplication and Division

Division and Multiplication are Related

3 × 4 = 12 or 4 × 3 = 12 gives two division facts;

                  12 ÷ 3 = 4 and 12 ÷ 4 = 3

From the above illustrations, we can see that multiplication and division are inverse operations.

For every multiplication fact with two different factors, there can be two division facts and vice-versa.

However, a multiplication fact of same numbers gives only one division fact.

For example, 4 × 4 = 16 gives 16 ÷ 4 = 4.

Multiplication Fact

2 × 3 = 6

3 × 2 = 6

5 × 6 = 30

6 × 5 = 30

8 × 7 = 56

7 × 8 = 56

9 × 4 = 36

4 × 9 = 36

7 × 7 = 49

Division Fact

6 ÷ 3 = 2

6 ÷ 2 = 3

30 ÷ 6 = 5

30 ÷ 5 = 6

56 ÷ 7 = 8

56 ÷ 8 = 7

36 ÷ 4 = 9

36 ÷ 9 = 4

49 ÷ 7 = 7
