Conversion of Roman Numeration

We will learn the conversion of Roman numeration. First we will learn how to convert numbers in roman numerals.

CONVERSION OF HINDU-ARABIC NUMBERS INTO ROMAN NUMBERS

1. Convert 579 in roman numerals.

579 = 500 + 70 + 9

      = (D + LXX + IX)

      = DLXXIX

2. Convert 5605 in roman numerals.

5605 = 5000 + 600 + 5

        = V + DC + V

        = VDCV

3. Convert 1347 in roman numerals.

1347 = 1000 + 300 + 40 + 7

        = M + CCC + LX + VII

        = MCCCXLVII

4. Convert 25493 in roman numerals.

25493 = 25000 + 400 + 90 + 3

         = XXV + CD + XC + III

         = XXVCDXCIII

Let us consider some larger Roman numbers.

5. If we have to represent 1525 in Roman number system, we write MDXXV.

MDXXV = 1000 + 500 + 10 + 10 + 5

6. If we have to represent 3340 in Roman number system, we write MMMXL.

MMMXL = 1000+1000+1000+50-10

Let us consider another example to understand the method of representing Hindu-Arabic numbers in Roman number system more clearly

7. Write the Roman numbers for the following Hindu-Arabic numbers.

(i) 1540

(ii) 2620

(iii) 1900

(iv) 3010

Solution:

(i) 1540 = 1000 + 500 + 40

             = MDXL  (M = 1000, D = 500, XL = 50 - 10 = 40 )

(ii) 2620 = 2000 + 600 + 20

             = 1000 + 1000 + 500 + 100 + 20

             = MMDCXX  (M = 1000, D=500, C = 100, x = 10 )

(iii)1900 = 1000 + 900

             = MCM  (M = 1000, C = 100, CM = 1000 - 100 = 900)

(iv) 3010 = 3000 + 10

               = 1000 + 1000 + 1000 + 10

               = MMMX  (M = 1000, X = 10)

CONVERSION OF ROMAN NUMBERS INTO HINDU-ARABIC NUMBERS

Now we will learn how to convert the Roman numerals in Hindi Arabic numerals.

1. Convert XLI in Hindi Arabic numerals.

XLI = 40 + 1

     = 41

2. Convert CCCV in Hindi Arabic numerals.

CCCV = 100 + 100 + 100 + 5

        = 305

3. Convert XXIV in Hindi Arabic numerals.

XXIV = 10 + 10 + 4

       = 24

4. Convert MDCLXIX in Hindi Arabic numerals.

MDCLXIX = 1000 + 600 + 60 + 9

             = 1669

Let us consider some more examples.

5. Convert MMCM into Hindu-Arabic number.

We know that M = 1000 and C = 100

So, MMCM = 1000 + 1000 + 1000 - 100

                = 2900. (CM = 1000 - 100)

6. Convert CMXL into Hindu-Arabic number.

We know that C = 100, M = 1000, X = 10 and L = 50

So, CMXL = 1000 - 100 + 50 - 10

               = 940 (CM = 1000 - 100, XL = 50 - 10)

7. Convert MCXLVIII into Hindu-Arabic number.

We know that M = 1000, C = 100, X = 10, L = 50, V = 5, l = 1

So, MCXLVIII = 1000 + 100 + 50 - 10 + 5 + 1 + 1 + 1

                    = 1148

               (MC = 1000 + 100, XL = 50 - 10, VIII = 5 + 1 + 1 + 1 )

Converting larger Roman numbers into Hindu-Arabic numbers may be little difficult for you. It needs a lot of practice.
