Worksheet on Subtraction of Polynomials

Practice the questions given in the worksheet on subtraction of polynomials. The questions are based on arranging the expressions to find the difference of monomials, binomials, trinomials and polynomials.

1. Arrange and subtract the monomials:

(i) 8ab2 from 15ab2

(ii) 9m2n from 7m2n

(iii) -4pq from -23pq

2. Arrange and subtract the binomials:

(i) 4a – 3b from 7a – 2b

(ii) 2ab3 + 3b from 7ab3 + 8b

(iii) 2m – 9m2n from 5m + 11m2n

3. Arrange and subtract the trinomials:

(i) -8a – 12b + 17c from a – b – c

(ii) 1 + 4m + 9m2 from 4 – m – 5m2

(iii) 7p + 8q – 3r from 5p – 2q + 9r

4. Find the difference of:

(i) 2x – 3y – 4z from x – 5y – 7z

(ii) m – 3mn + 2n + 9 from 11m – 7mn + 2n - 5

(iii) 4ab + 6bc – 8ca from 6ab – 3bc – 3ca + 11abc

(iv) p2q – q + p from 5p2q – 4p + 7q

(v) 2pq + rs – pr – 2qs from pq – 2rs + 2pr + qs

(vi) 5 – x – 4y + 4z from 5x – 7y + 2z

5. Subtract the following expressions:

(i) 4p2 – 3q2 + 5q – 2 from 6p2 – 3pq + 7q2 + 4p - 2

(ii) 3ab – a2 – 2b2 from 3a2 + 4b2 + ab

(iii) 7p2 – q2 – 5pq from 2p2 + 5q2 + 3pq

(iv) 5x – 3y + 2z from x – 4y – 2z

(v) 4p – 6q + 3r from 12p + 7q – 21r

6. What must be added to 1 – 2x + 3x2 to obtain 3 + 5x – 7x2?

7. What must be subtracted from -4m2 + 5m – 3 to obtain m2 – 3m?
