In product of rational numbers we will learn how to multiply two or more rational numbers.
For any two rational numbers a/b and c/d, we get (a/b × c/d) = (a × c)/(b × d)
How to find the product of two rational numbers?
1. Multiply (-25/9) by (-18/15)
Solution:
(-25/9) × (-18/15)
= (-25) × (-18)/9 × 15
= 450/135
= 10/3
2. Simplify: -9/7 × 5/3
Solution:
(-9/7) × 5/3
= (-9) × 5/7 × 3
= -45/21
= -15/7
3. Simplify: 6/11 × (-55)/36
Solution:
6/11 × (-55)/36
= 6 × -55/11 × 36
= -330/396
= -5/6
4. Simplify: (-16)/21 by 14/(-5)
Solution:
(-16)/21 × 14/(-5)
= (-16) × (14)/21 × (-5)
= -224/(-105)
= 32/15
5. Simplify: -28/81 by -27/(-14)
Solution:
-28/81 × -27/(-14)
= (-28) × (-27)/81 × (-14)
= 756/(-1134)
= -2/3
6. Find each of the following products:
(i) 2/3 × -5/7
(ii) -7/8 × 3/5
(iii) -15/4 × -3/8
Solution:
(i) 2/3 × -5/7
= (2 × -5)/(3 × 7)
= -10/21
(ii) -7/8 × 3/5
= {(-7) × 3}/(8 × 5)
= -21/40
(iii) -15/4 × -3/8
= {(-15) × (-3)}/(4 × 8)
= 45/32
7. Verify that: 2/3 × (6/7 × (-14)/15) = (2/3 × 6/7) × (-14)/15
Solution:
LHS = 2/3 × {6/7 × (-14)/15 } = 2/3 × {6 × (-14)}/(7
× 15)
= 2/3 × (-84)/105
= 2/3 × (-4) /5 = {2 × (-4)}/(3 × 5) = -8/15
RHS = (2/3×6/7) × (-14)/15 = (2 × 6)/(3 × 7) × (-14)/15
= 12/21 × (-14)/15
= 4/7 × (-14)/15 = {4 × (-14)}/(7 × 15) = -56/105 = -8/15
Therefore, LHS = RHS.
Hence, 2/3 × {6/7 × (-14)/15} = (2/3 × 6/7) × (-14)/15
