We will learn how to simplify the numerical expressions involving whole numbers. We know how to perform the fundamental operations, namely addition, subtraction, multiplication and division involving whole numbers and now we will learn to perform two or more operations together.
Solved examples to simplify the numerical expressions involving whole numbers:
Simplify the following expression:
(i) 20 + 20 ÷ 5 + 7 × 9
= 20 + 4 + 7 × 9 (First step: Divide 20 ÷ 5 = 4)
= 20 + 4 + 63 (Second step: Multiply 7 × 9 = 63)
= 87 (Third step: Add 20 + 4 + 63 = 87)
Therefore, 20 + 20 ÷ 5 + 7 × 9 = 87
(ii) 7 × 5 - 3 + 25 ÷ 5 × 7
= 7 × 5 - 3 + 5 × 7 (First step: Divide 25 ÷ 5 = 5)
= 35 - 3 + 35 (Second step: Multiply 7 × 5 = 35 and 5 × 7 = 35)
= 35 + 35 - 3 (Third step: Rearrange)
= 70 - 3 (Fourth step: Add 35 + 35 = 70)
= 67 (Fifth step: Subtract 70 - 3 = 67)
Therefore, 7 × 5 - 3 + 25 ÷ 5 × 7 = 67
(iii) 15 × 2 + 4 - 22
= 30 + 4 - 22 (First step: Multiply 15 × 2 = 30)
= 34 - 22 (Second step: Add 30 + 4 = 34)
= 12 (Third step: Subtract 34 - 22 = 12)
Therefore, 15 × 2 + 4 - 22 = 12
