Why is a number line used?
A number line is used to represent numbers, such as fractions, whole numbers, integers, etc.
For drawing a number line; draw a line of some suitable length and mark points on it so that the line is divided into required equal parts. Mark its middle point as zero. Towards the right of zero, mark the numbers +1, +2, +3,…… etc. at equal distances and towards the left of zero, mark -1, -2, -3,…… etc. at the same equal distances. Mark arrow heads at both the ends of the number line to show that the lines as well as the numbers continue upto infinity on the negative side and also on the positive side.
Thus, a number line is of the form as shown below:
So, using this number line we will learn how to compare two numbers.
