Addition of 2-Digit Numbers using Expanded Form

We will discuss about addition of 2-digit numbers with regrouping using expanded form:

Let's try to solve the following examples

1. Add 45 and 37.

Solution:

       45     =   4 tens   +    5 ones

   +  37    =    3 tens   +   7 ones

     Sum   =    7 tens   +  12 ones

              =     7  tens   +   1 ten   + 2 ones

              =     8  tens   + 2 ones              =    82

Therefore,  45 + 37 = 82

2. Add 57 and 24.

Solution:

       57     =   5 tens   +    7 ones

   +  24    =    2 tens   +   4 ones

     Sum   =    7 tens   +  11 ones

              =     7  tens   +   1 ten   + 1 one

              =     8  tens   + 1 one              =    81

Therefore,  57 + 24 = 81

3. Add 38 and 57.

Solution:

       38     =   3 tens   +    8 ones

   +  57    =    5 tens   +   7 ones

     Sum   =    8 tens   +  15 ones

              =     8  tens   +   1 ten   +  5 ones

              =     9  tens   + 5 ones              =    95

Therefore,  38 + 57 = 95

4. Add 19 and 39.

Solution:

       19     =   1 ten    +    9 ones

   +  39    =    3 tens   +    9 ones

     Sum   =    4 tens    +  18 ones

              =     4  tens   +   1 tens   +  8 ones

              =     5  tens   +   8 ones              =    58

Therefore,  19 + 39 = 58

5. Add 54 and 29.

Solution:

       54     =   5 tens    +    4 ones

   +  29    =    2 tens   +     9 ones

     Sum   =    7 tens    +  13 ones

              =     7  tens   +   1 tens   +  3 ones

              =     8  tens   +   3 ones              =    83

Therefore,  54 + 29 = 83

6. Add 67 and 23.

Solution:

       67     =   6 tens    +    7 ones

   +  23    =    2 tens   +     3 ones

     Sum   =    8 tens    +  10 ones

              =     8  tens   +   1 ten

              =     9  tens                    =    90

Therefore,  67 + 23 = 90
